I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
Psalm 139:14
Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it;
1 Timothy 6:6-7

Our Church Harvest Festival
On 18th September, we will gather here for our Annual Church Harvest. Have you ever wondered what all this harvest festival we celebrate annually is about? Harvest is a key part of the church year. On harvest day, our thoughts turn to our daily supply of food and we give thanks to the God who through rain and sunshine enables farmers to produce enough to feed us.

We also think of people who produce the implements used to till the land and others who work in the chain through which food gets to our plates. Harvest therefore offers us an opportunity to rejoice and celebrate our generous God. Through harvest, we proclaim among other things, God’s bountiful blessing, God’s goodness and providence, God’s provision for those who are hungry and thirsty. Through donations we make at harvest we support the needs of many in our world that are less fortunate than we are.

When we do this, we are able to sing confidently with the hymnist:
“We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land; But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand: He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain. All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord for all his love.” (StF 130)

Lord Teach Us How to Pray

“Lord, teach us how to pray aright, with reverence and with fear; though dust and ashes in thy sight, we may, we must draw near.” (A hymn by James Montgomery, [1771 – 1819] found in No 539 of the 30th edition of the Methodist Hymn Book published in 1933)

Prayer is meant to be part of the daily life of every Christian. However countless personal experiences have shown that many believers struggle to pray.  What is prayer? How do I pray? What do I say when I am praying? Do I have to close my eyes? What should be the method for prayer? Are there any techniques? How about posture? These and many other questions continue to occupy our attention in our quest to improve in our prayer life.

In Luke 11 (with a slightly different version in Matthew 6), the disciples asked Our Lord to teach them to pray, just like the Methodist in particular and Christians in general do when they sing the hymn above. They wanted to learn how to pray “just as John taught his disciples”.  Jesus does notgive them a “method” or “technique”. He says nothing about posture or breathing but guides us with some words to use when praying, with the assurance that God knows our concerns even before we pray.  Maybe the disciples’ question to Jesus is your question too. Maybe it is most relevant to us in our fast-moving, hyperactive, technology-oriented world where more and more people are trying to find meaning in their lives and to develop a living relationship with the Lord in prayer.  It is ok to have questions about prayer and in future editions; we will endeavour to deal with some of our questions on prayer. In the meantime, let us keep praying.  More on prayer to follow soon
