We seek to help people of all ages to discover Christ as Lord, and commit themselves to serving Him in and through His Church “… We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us…” 2Cor 5:20

Minister shares part of his journey

“…I had to finally say “yes” … due to the relentless pursuit of Jesus Christ himself.”

Grace and peace to you from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

It has been a great privilege to be the minister of Edgware Methodist Church. To share in worship mission and ministry with all members so that together we can respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship here at Edgware and beyond.  Although it has only been since September 2015 that I arrived among you, the opportunities and challenges for the time spent together so far have been many and intriguing.  I am very excited about this. I am faithfully looking forward to the years ahead to enable growth as we seek to live out our calling as Methodist people.  The Methodist Church upholds that our calling manifest itself through worship, learning & caring, service and evangelism.

The journey that has led me to this role has been very long and winding, marked with several episodes of diversions.  I was born into a modest but disciplined Christian family in Kumasi, Ghana, and baptised into the Methodist Church at a very early age.  Attending church regularly and learning about God’s love through Sunday school and later through the Guild, Youth, Bible Study and Prayer Groups helped to grow my faith and personal discipleship.  By the time I was in my teens, I had begun to feel the call of God on my life yet I was unable to say yes.  When Pope Benedict was a cardinal, he wrote an article entitled “Me, a priest? How do I know?” In it, he expresses how there is no right to priest hood and the fact that one cannot choose priesthood like choosing a job but rather one needs to be chosen by God himself for the vocation.

In line with this, I resisted this call every time there was an affirmation and I had an excuse to say no.  However, the love that will not let me go continuously pursued me.  I embraced a career in teaching over numerous years. I learned music and practiced music in the church for many years, all in an attempt to do something for God and in God’s service, but not priesthood. However, I continued to battle with the still small voice that kept nudging me especially in my moments of solitude. Probably just like Elijah as recorded in I Kings 19. 9‑14; He found God not in the mighty wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in the gentle breeze. Borrowing words from John R Stott, expounding on a poem by Francis Thompson titled “The Hound of Heaven”, I had to finally say “yes” not because of parental influence, tutelage, experience, knowledge or even personal decision but by the relentless pursuit of Jesus Christ himself.  Although my calling has been discerned with the church and I have been trained, tested and approved, I continuously see many personal inadequacies.  I there fore invite you to journey with me in this role as I seek to shepherd our church in the direction that Christ wants us to go.  Your advice and wise counsel are encouraged, and will be received as immense support.

Saying thank you to volunteers

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Psalms 34:3

We take this opportunity to express sincere thanks to all who have volunteered and taken up roles and responsibilities in the church over this year.  I recognise that it takes a considerable amount of time, effort and sacrifice to participate in this great ministry, yet I also know how rewarding it can be on a personal level, as well as the great blessing it is for the entire church.

We particularly thank Samuel (senior steward) and the team of stewards, Nana Akowuah and her team of Communion stewards, Alex Jones and Samuel Retiola for Secretarial duties, James and members of finance and property committee, Antonio and the team who put in their effort in looking after the church, Katherine and the team of Junior Church staff, Charles and Elinor for their support with Music in Worship, Nana and the team of pastoral visitors, Vida and her Hospitality team, Augusta and Eric and the media team, as well as all other members of church council and other committees, not forgetting Diane and all who clean this place and help make this place welcoming.

Attributed to David, Psalms 34:3 says “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.”  The call to exalt God’s name “together” seems to speak of exactly what we do when we join our forces together here in this place.  I wish to appeal for more of us to get involve.  Our Church I believe is filled with talented and gifted people, and there continues to be a place for everyone to offer their gifts and service to the Lord. So I urge you to speak to the minister or the senior steward of whatever you feel called to do in this church.  God richly bless you!
